Rapid Plasma Reagin test for syphilis screening among workers in some industrial complexes

Abstract
Since the discovery of penicillin, the morbidity rate of syphilis had been reduced drastically to predict it to be completely eradicated from this world. However, the morbidity of the disease has increased all over the world since 1960.
Such being the case, it is almost impossible to figure out the exact nation-wide morbidity rate of syphilis in Korea. There have been several locality limited researches and efforts to reveal the rate yielding only fragment results.
Fortunately, with some aid from MOE/GV, it was possible to make a trial to study the morbidity of syphilis among 729 workers in Po Hang and Ul San Industrial Complexes. In addition to the morbidity, factors related to the disease infection such as educational level, religion, preventive measures around coitus, history of urethritis, and so on were studied and analysed to check significant correlation.
The results were as follows;
1. VDRL and RPCF tests were undertaken to determine the sensitivity and specificity of RPR Card Test which was utilized to the total sampled workers in this study. It revealed 86.4% of sensitivity and 87.7% of specificity from RPR test, and 81.8% of sensitivity, 90.1% of specificity from VDRL test. There were 87.4% of agreement rate between RPR and VDRL. Actually, RPR was more sensitive but less specific than VDRL, and found to be a satisfactory screening test for syphilis especially in the field.
2. Among the workers in Po Hang Area 24.0% of them revealed reactive result, and in Ul San Area 5.2% of sampled workers revealed reactive showing relative risk of 4.6 among workers in Po Hang Area.
3. According to the personal characteristics of workers, there were significant correlation between educational levels and reactive rates by area, and religious differences. About 6.3% of samples used antibiotics as a preventive measure of V.D. in general but in vain because of their ignorance. There were no significant correlation between history of urethritis, insane coitus and RPR reactive rates.
